Duayne : Hello! I’m Duayne Pearce.
Amelia: And I’m Amelia Lee.
Duayne: And together, we are Live Life Build.
Amelia: We’re on a mission to elevate the professionalism of the residential construction industry and enable renovating and building homes to be enjoyable for everyone involved - including you, the builder!
We do this via the free help and information on our website and social media, and the support and education we provide to custom residential builders in our online courses and group coaching program.
Duayne: Now, if you’re here, it’s because you’re most likely a builder who knows you want something different, something better, from your projects, business and life. But perhaps you don’t know how to go about it, or what you need to change to get that improvement you’re looking for.
I’m a builder with my own building business, and have been in the industry for over 20 years now. And for many years, I was like this too. I was really struggling, finding it hard to make ends meet in the business, and feeling constant stress and frustration at my projects, my clients, my team and my business.
I knew I wanted things to be different, to be better. I just couldn’t seem to make it that way (make it that way). And it wasn’t for lack of looking, or for lack of advice either. I had loads of people telling me what I should and shouldn’t do to be a better builder and a better business owner. I paid a lot of money for coaching, and I had people in my business - including my wife - telling me what I needed to do to change things.
But still, I found it hard to get motivated. For things to stick. And for a long time I didn’t listen to the advice I was being given. I just let things get worse and worse.
Amelia: We find many builders are like this. As an architect, I’ve worked in the industry for over 27 years now, and worked closely with builders as I’ve helped homeowners with their renovations and new builds. So often, I’ve seen builders struggling to communicate, to stay on top of their business admin, to manage the expectations of their client. Builders are people pleasers by nature, and I’d see so many who were great at building homes, but really just didn’t know how to run a great business. And so often, they’d end up with a stuff up on site, a mistake in costs or their contract, and they’d be in legal trouble, or heading out the back door financially.
Duayne: Now, through Live Life Build, we work closely with builders to turn this around. To provide the tools, resources, templates, guides and knowledge, so they can get the support and help they need to improve their projects, business and life.
Amelia: Everything we teach is based on our 6P Methodology. These are our 6 foundations we believe underpin being a successful, thriving builder and business owner.
These 6Ps are:
- Personal
- Projects
- People
- Partnerships
- Processes
- and Professional
Across this 5 Days to a Winning Week Challenge, we’ll share more with you about this 6P Methodology, and how you can use it to turn things around for yourself.
Duayne: So, let’s kick off our 5 Days with Day #1: Monday Momentum. Now, you can do this at any point during your week - don’t wait for Monday to get started. But this is a great way to create a routine for your working week that will flow onto create big changes in your life and business too.
You heard Amelia say that the first of our 6P’s is PERSONAL.
I know that, for a long, long time, I really struggled to think about myself and my well-being, or put myself first. And as a result, everything else suffered.
It’s natural to have the mindset that you have to wait until everything else is sorted to make time for yourself. To make time for exercise, or doing things you know improve your health and well-being. The business needs to be right first. But this is the thing to realise: The business can’t be right until you’re right. You are your business’s biggest asset, and you need to put yourself - and your health - first.
Once you do, you’ll be amazed at how even spending a short amount of time a day can dramatically improve your productivity, and your ability to get things done. And enable you to think more clearly, feel more relaxed and be more focusses as well.
Amelia: It’s not accidental that PERSONAL is our first P in our 6P Methodology. We’ve seen time and time again that builders will struggle with prioritising this, but once they do, it’s amazing how much things can shift and change in every other aspect of their life and business. You may think, as a builder, that working on a building site is getting regular exercise - but that’s very different to scheduling time each week to work out, or go for a walk or a run.
Perhaps you can consider how you could start making regular exercise a priority in your working week. It has massive benefits for your stress levels, ability to sleep well, and your personal health and well-being. Plus, it can be social, a great way to spend time with your partner or kids, and support those relationships in your life too.
Duayne: For our Monday Momentum, though, we’re going to start with something that’s really simple to do, and easy to fit into your day.
For two minutes, we want you to breathe slowly, in and out. This may sound woo woo, and you may be thinking “hey I breathe every day”, but I bet you’re not thinking about it, or seeing how you can slow it down, breathe deeply and do it in a focussed and calm way.
Amelia: There’s all sorts of scientific benefits in breathing deeply. Deep breathing has been proven to affect the heart, the brain, digestion and the immune system. Research has shown that breathing exercises can have an immediate effect in changing blood pressure, or altering the pH of your blood. It lowers stress and anxiety as well.
Duayne: So, we challenge you: take 2 minutes to breathe in and out, slowly and deeply. Breathe in for the count of four, and out for the count of four.
LIke this …
1, 2, 3, 4 and out 1, 2, 3, 4
Hippy and woo woo - maybe? Effective - most definitely.
Amelia: Do it a few times a day. When you’re sitting in traffic. When you’re waiting for the kettle to boil. At smoko. Take a moment to jot down your stress levels out of 10 before you start, and then after you’ve done this. We’ve even provided a worksheet for you to keep track.
Duayne: We bet it’ll help you relax and feel better. And once you feel better, you can make better decisions for yourself, your projects and your business.
Amelia: Check the notes below where we share an easy win for you for your Monday Momentum, and ways you can next level this day of the Winning Week Challenge. We’ve also got a link to your Winning Week worksheet. And, there’s some more information and resources if you want to dive deeper.
Duayne: And hey - tell us you’re doing this. Send us a DM on instagram, or tag us on your socials. We’d love to see you putting this into action.
Amelia: We’ll see you tomorrow for Day 2 of our Winning Week Challenge.
